Turks and Caicos Airport Transfer Guide: Arriving at Providenciales International Airport (PLS)

For most visitors, a Turks and Caicos holiday begins the moment the wheels touch down at Providenciales International Airport. It is a small, warm and generally friendly airport, but arrival procedures, drive times and transport choices are not always obvious before you travel. This Providenciales and Turks and Caicos airport transportation guide is written by the Secure Taxi team, who move guests between the airport, Grace Bay and the resorts every day of the year.

Providenciales International Airport (PLS): the basics

Providenciales International Airport was officially renamed Howard Hamilton International Airport in 2015, but almost everyone — airlines, taxi drivers and residents included — still calls it Providenciales International Airport or simply “PLS” after its airport code.

• Codes: PLS (IATA), MBPV (ICAO).
• Location: in the centre of the island of Providenciales, about 10 minutes from Downtown and 12 to 15 minutes from Grace Bay.
• Terminal: a single passenger terminal handling both international and domestic (inter-island) flights.
• Main airlines: American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Air Canada, WestJet and British Airways (seasonal), plus the regional carriers interCaribbean Airways and Caicos Express Airways for Grand Turk, South Caicos and Salt Cay.
• Scale: most aircraft park on the apron, so you walk down air stairs and across the tarmac. Seating, dining and shopping airside are limited, and the terminal can feel busy when several flights land or depart together.

What to expect when you arrive

The walk from the aircraft to the terminal is short but usually sunny and hot, so keep a hat and any essentials in your hand luggage. Once inside, the flow is straightforward: immigration, then baggage claim, then customs, then the arrivals hall.

Immigration

There are separate lines for visitors and for residents and citizens. Arrivals tend to bunch together in the early afternoon when the main flights from the United States land, and the visitor queue can take anywhere from 10 minutes to around 45 minutes at the busiest times. An immigration card is normally handed out during your flight — complete it before you land and keep a pen handy.

Baggage claim and customs

There are one or two baggage belts. Porters are available and work for tips. After collecting your bags you pass through customs; most visitors have nothing to declare and walk straight through.

The arrivals hall

The arrivals hall has car rental desks, a small number of shops, an ATM and a taxi dispatch point. Pre-booked private drivers wait here holding name boards. Once you leave this area you cannot return to the secure part of the airport, so this is where you meet your driver.

Clearing immigration and customs smoothly

Turks and Caicos is generally an easy entry for visitors from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union, who do not need a visa for a normal tourist stay. Entry requirements do change, so confirm the current rules with your airline or the Turks and Caicos Government before you travel. In practice you should be ready to show:

• a valid passport;
• a return or onward ticket;
• the address of your accommodation (a screenshot of your booking confirmation is enough);
• your completed immigration card.

A few things speed the process up: fill in the immigration card on the plane, know your exact departure date, keep your accommodation details on your phone or on paper, and make sure the whole family joins the same queue together. Note that Providenciales International Airport has no United States pre-clearance — if you are travelling home to the US you clear American immigration on arrival there, not in Providenciales.

Your transport options from the airport

There are four practical ways to get from Providenciales International Airport to your accommodation.

Private airport transfers vs. taxis

Both a licensed taxi and a private transfer will get you to your resort in a similar amount of time. The differences are in price certainty, waiting and the level of service.

Airport taxis

Taxis wait at the rank immediately outside the arrivals hall. Fares are set by a Turks and Caicos Government tariff based on your destination, charged per trip for one or two passengers, with an added charge for each additional passenger and possible surcharges for late-night arrivals and extra luggage. Many island taxis are vans, and at busy times a dispatcher may group several parties heading the same way. It is a reliable option, but the final price is confirmed by the driver rather than known when you board, and no one is waiting for you if your flight is delayed.

Private airport transfers

A private Providenciales airport transfer is arranged before you travel. Your driver tracks your flight, meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your luggage and takes only your party to your door. The price is quoted and agreed in advance, the vehicle is matched to your group size, child seats are fitted before you arrive, and the same company handles your return trip to the airport.

From Providenciales Airport to Grace Bay

Grace Bay is the twelve-mile stretch of beach and the resort district where most visitors stay, so this is the journey we make most often. The route runs from Airport Road onto the Leeward Highway and into Grace Bay, a distance of roughly 6 miles (10 km).

A taxi from Providenciales Airport to Grace Bay takes about 12 to 15 minutes outside of peak traffic. Allow a little longer during the Saturday and Sunday changeover, when many guests arrive and leave at once, or when roadworks are underway on the Leeward Highway. What it costs

The taxi fare from Providenciales Airport to Grace Bay is set by the government tariff and charged per journey for one to two passengers, with an additional amount for each extra passenger and a possible surcharge for late-night arrivals and excess luggage. As a rough guide, expect somewhere in the region of US$25 to US$40 for a couple to a Grace Bay resort, with more for larger parties. Airport to beaches, resorts and villas

Most Grace Bay and Bight resorts are 12 to 20 minutes from the airport. The table below gives typical driving times; add a few minutes at busy periods.

Club Med and Beaches

Club Med Turkoise and Beaches Turks & Caicos are large all-inclusive resorts, and guests usually arrive with plenty of luggage and, at Beaches, with children. A taxi from Providenciales Airport to Club Med Turkoise or a taxi from Providenciales Airport to Beaches Resort takes around 12 to 15 minutes, but for these properties a van with space for bags and pre-fitted child seats usually makes for a smoother arrival than whatever is next at the rank.

Villa arrivals

If you are staying in a private villa, give your transfer company the exact villa name, the complex or road it sits on, any gate code, and a local contact number. Villas are often unmarked, so a driver who knows the area — and who has your details in advance — saves a frustrating search at the end of a long travel day. Ask your driver to stop at a supermarket (IGA or Graceway Gourmet) on the way if you are self-catering; island grocery stores close relatively early.

How early to leave for Providenciales Airport

Providenciales International Airport has a single security screening line, and it backs up when several large flights depart within the same window — typically late morning and midday at weekends. Plan to be at the airport:

• 3 hours before an international departure in peak season (mid-December to mid-April) or at weekends;
• 2 to 2.5 hours before an international departure at quieter times;
• 2 hours before a regional or domestic flight to another island.

The drive to the airport takes about the same as the drive in, but add a buffer for weekend changeover traffic on the Leeward Highway. Book your return transfer at the same time as your arrival transfer; your driver will recommend a pickup time based on your flight and confirm it with you the day before. Departure tax is already included in your airline ticket, and if you rented a car, return it with a full tank — the nearest fuel stations are a few minutes from the terminal.

Transfers for families, couples and groups

Couples

A car or small SUV is quick, private and comfortable for two with normal luggage.

Families

Ask for child and booster seats when you book and give the ages of the children so the right seats are fitted. A van keeps the family, the strollers and the luggage together in one vehicle, and your driver can build in a grocery stop.

Large groups, weddings and corporate travel

For groups of seven or more we coordinate multiple vans so everyone travels together and arrives at the same time, even when flights land an hour or two apart or guests are staying at more than one resort or villa. One person is your point of contact for the whole movement, including the return. If anyone in your party has mobility needs or is travelling with a folding wheelchair, let us know in advance so we can assign a suitable vehicle.

VIP meet-and-greet at Providenciales Airport

A meet-and-greet means your driver is inside the arrivals hall with your name on a board before you clear customs. They take your bags, walk you to a cooled vehicle and, for VIP bookings, have chilled water and towels waiting. It is particularly welcome for honeymooners, first-time visitors, older travellers and families arriving on an early or overnight flight.

A private meet-and-greet does not let you bypass immigration or customs, which are controlled by the government, but it does remove the queue for a taxi at one end and the uncertainty of finding an unmarked villa at the other. For departures, the service works in reverse: a curbside drop, help getting bags to the check-in desk, and assistance for anyone who needs it.

If your flight is delayed

Flight disruption is the situation a private transfer handles best. Before you travel, give us your flight number. From then on:

• If your flight is delayed: we track it and adjust your pickup automatically. There is no extra charge for reasonable delays.
• If your flight is diverted or you are rerouted: send a WhatsApp message and we will move your pickup to the new flight or the next day.
• If you miss a connection and overnight in a hub: contact us and we will rebook your transfer for your new arrival, normally at no charge.
• If you are relying on a taxi: you simply join the rank whenever you land, though a late-night surcharge may apply and the rank thins out after the last scheduled arrival.

During hurricane season (June to November), build flexibility into your plans, keep your airline’s app installed and consider travel insurance that covers trip delay.

Airport to the ferry terminal and other islands

North and Middle Caicos

The passenger ferry to North Caicos runs from the Walkin Marina and Heaving Down Rock area at Leeward, on the northeast tip of Providenciales. The drive from Providenciales International Airport to the Leeward ferry dock is about 20 to 25 minutes. The crossing to Sandy Point, North Caicos, takes around 30 minutes, and a causeway then links North Caicos to Middle Caicos. Allow 45 to 60 minutes between landing and the ferry departure once you have collected luggage; we can time the transfer to the sailing you are booked on.

Grand Turk, South Caicos and Salt Cay

There is no passenger ferry between Providenciales and these islands. Transportation from Providenciales to Grand Turk is by a short domestic flight of about 30 minutes with interCaribbean Airways or Caicos Express Airways, leaving from the same Providenciales International Airport. We can transfer you between the international and domestic areas, or collect you from your resort for a later island-hopper connection.

Private boat charters and the cays

Private boat charters to the smaller cays — Water Cay, Pine Cay, Parrot Cay — and to North and Middle Caicos usually depart from Leeward or Blue Hills, both a short transfer from the airport.

Cruise arrivals

Cruise ships that visit Turks and Caicos dock at the Grand Turk Cruise Center, which is on the island of Grand Turk rather than Providenciales. On the occasions when a ship anchors off Providenciales and tenders passengers ashore at South Dock or the Bight, a transfer from South Dock to Grace Bay takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Practical tips for your arrival

• Currency: the US dollar is the official currency of Turks and Caicos. Bring small bills for tips and taxi fares; cards are widely accepted at resorts and restaurants.
• Tipping: 10 to 15 per cent for drivers is customary.
• Driving: traffic drives on the left.
• Data: buy an eSIM before you fly, or a Flow or Digicel SIM at the airport or in Downtown. Airport wifi can be slow.
• Power: outlets are US-style 120V, so North American devices need no adapter.
• Carry-on: pack sunscreen, medication and a change of clothes in your hand luggage in case a checked bag is delayed.
• Keep your driver’s number: save the WhatsApp contact and use the same driver for restaurants, excursions and your departure.
